Definitely a bit late getting to posting my Mounted War Games recap, ironically it’s because I’ve got another event this weekend (Harvest Days) that I’ve been having to prep for.
I only had one goal for MWG this year: For it to go better than last year, as the last one was a pretty dismal experience for me. To be clear this was not in any way due to the event or its organizers, just life changes, logistical problems, and receiving bad news all in the span of the event made it hard to come out positive from that one.
This time however, it went wonderfully. I spent the majority of a VERY hot and humid Saturday demoing coin striking, and got a batch of both vigil tokens and gaming tokens for Harvest Days completed, while having some good conversations with a number of good folks interested in learning the craft.
Weather was better on Sunday, and I was able to get out on the rapier list and had some pretty good fights. I didn’t win the main tournament (that honor goes to my Warder, Liu Kuaici), but I was honored by their newly invested Baronesses by being chosen as the Baronial Rapier Champion of Shadowed Stars!
Ironically, this now means that all three baronies of Constellation (Rivenstar, Sternfeld, and Shadowed Stars) have claimed ownership of me in one form or another at court (I got my start and found my first SCA home in Rivenstar, I currently do a fair amount of things with Sternfeld as the closest barony to Mynydd Seren, and now I am Shadowed Stars’ rapier champion) , which will definitely make future Three Saints events interesting haha.
This event really gave me a good look at just how much things can change in a year. Last MWG I was there by myself, sleep deprived from sleeping on the ground in a tent too small for my air mattress, and left the event weeping. This year, I was surrounded by friends and found family, got to show off my craft, and left beaming with the honor of being chosen as rapier champion.
You never believe it when people say it, but it does get better. It takes longer than you would like, and things won’t ever quite be the same as they used to be, but it will get better.
On that note, as I finish typing this it’s back to scrambling to get things together for Harvest Days XL/Tournament of Defense this weekend. Hope to see folks there!
