Gonna get a little sappy and emotional for this one. For those that don’t know, the back half of 2023 was a really rough time for me. On top of financial hardships and the loss of my pets, there were a series of conflicts and a falling out with people once very close to me. I briefly contemplated quitting the SCA and never going back.

Even after I decided to stay, finding any joy in the things I once loved was trouble. How do you find solace in your hobbies when it was within your hobbies that you were hurt? Well, it’s in the people that still make it worth it. The people that got you to where you are today, that were there through the hardship, that you couldn’t bear to lose too.

On my belt, I wore 3 kumihimo cords, each one braided myself and depicting heraldic colors. One for my kingdom, one for my shire, one for myself. I made them to show where my loyalties lied. There used to be one more, for someone no longer in my life. But as I contemplated that loss one day, I found that there have been so many great people that I have known in my relatively short time in the SCA, such greater influences on my life and my SCA journey. The people that still make it worth it.

So now, where once there were 3 cords, there are now 13.

One for myself, to to remind me to take care of myself before anything else. It bears a cord for each award I’ve been honored with (Cavendish Knot).

One for Midrealm, my kingdom and crown, for whom I fight and whose allegiance I swear.

One for Rivenstar, my first home in the SCA, and beneath it a cord for each of my first fencing teachers, who helped my to find passion in fencing and the SCA.

One for Mynydd Seren, where I currently call home, and beneath it a cord for each of those I have come to call my closest friends, who helped me to find love and passion for the society once again in the face of hardship.

This is an ongoing and continually updating project, and I expect it to grow over the many years to come.
