Notes

This coin was struck at the end of the all day coin making workshop at War of the Lilies 2024, which covered the entire coin making process and production of a finished day throughout the day. The reverse is my design, which was made to be reminiscent of a long-cross English silver penny, as well as incorporating some rose-like imagery into the central design.

Many examples of the long-cross penny can be found here, but most have the same general appearance as the one below.

The rose is more interpretive as I wasn’t trying to do anything too fancy (the dies at the workshop were freehanded on the fly with a limited time to work them), but it is intended to evoke the feeling of the large central bloom on the Edward VI penny. One day I will probably do this actual die in earnest.

The obverse die was carved by William Douglas, and provided for all participants to strike with at the end of the workshop.

Because this die was designed and carved on the fly, there unfortunately aren’t any process pictures or notes, aside from a few candid shots taken while I was working.
